Mastercard (MA) Expected to Continue the Steady Rise

Monday, September 10th, 2018

This week we are looking at another of the Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) Top 50 List companies.  We use this list in one of our options portfolios to spot outperforming stocks and place option spreads that take advantage of the momentum.

The actual Terry’s Tips portfolio which trades essentially every weekly play that we send to you has gained 91% so far this year (after paying all commissions, of course).  The portfolio started out the year with $5000, and on June 15, 2018, we withdrew $5000 from the portfolio so that all subscribers who followed it would all their money back and be playing with pure profits.  The portfolio is now worth $4552.

I especially like this week’s idea because I like Mastercard and believe that last week’s weakness in the stock price was unwarranted.  Enjoy the full report below.

Mastercard (MA) Expected to Continue the Steady Rise

Among the list of IBD Top 50 companies Mastercard stands out as its uptrend is far steadier than any of the other companies.  These two articles suggest the stock will continue the trend – Mastercard’s Stock May Have Big Gains Ahead and Mastercard’s Strategy Suggests Further Stock Price Growth Ahead After 60% Rise.

MA has been trading in an uptrend channel that originates back to a low posted in December 2017.  The stock price pulled back in the past week and is near support that consists of a horizontal level at $208 as well as the 20-day moving average.  Slightly below the support confluence is the lower bound of the uptrend channel.  In this context, the stock appears to be well support with a clear upside bias.

If you agree there’s further upside ahead for MA, consider this trade which is a bet that the stock will continue to advance over the next five weeks, or at least not decline very much.

Buy To Open MA 12OCT18 207.5 Puts (MA181012P207.5)
Sell To Open MA 12OCT18 210 Puts (MA181012P210) for a credit of $0.93 (selling a vertical)

This price was $0.02 less than the mid-point of the option spread when MA was trading near $211.  Unless the stock rallies quickly from here, you should be able to get close to this amount.

Your commission on this trade will only be $2.50 per spread (the rate charged by thinkorswim for Terry’s Tips’ subscribers).  Each contract would then yield $90.50 and your broker would charge a $250 maintenance fee, making your investment $159.50 ($250 – $90.50).  If MA closes at any price above $210 on October 12, both options would expire worthless, and your return on the spread would be 57% (650% annualized).

Can GrubHub (GRUB) Continue the Upside Momentum?

Monday, September 3rd, 2018

This week we are looking at another of the Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) Top 50 List companies.  We use this list in one of our options portfolios to spot outperforming stocks and place option spreads that take advantage of the momentum.

The Terry’s Tips portfolio that takes actual positions in most of these weekly ideas has gained 88% (after commissions) so far in 2018, taking all the completed gains and losses into consideration.  The portfolio currently has five spreads in place, and all of the underlying stocks are trading at a price which is higher than the max gain bogey price, so we are looking for even better results going forward.

Can GrubHub (GRUB) Continue the Upside Momentum?

GrubHub’s stock price recently broke to record highs and these two analysts are optimistic there’s further growth ahead – Why GrubHub Is a Better Growth Stock Than Starbucks and Is GrubHub (GRUB) Outperforming Other Computer and Technology Stocks This Year?

GRUB fell into a consolidation in the first half of August after turning from resistance around $138.  The stock price regained some upside momentum in the second half of the month, breaking both above resistance and to fresh record highs.  The horizontal level is now seen as support in the event of a near-term pullback.  The higher time frames show a clearer outlook as the weekly chart shows a distinct upward continuation from the prior consolidation.  On a Monthly chart, the stock closed near highs which indicates strength.  As well, it managed to do so despite a long tail on the prior candle which suggests the selling pressure in late July was temporary.

Sell To Open GRUB 05OCT18 144 Puts (GRUB181005P144) for a credit of $1.33 (selling a vertical)

This price was $0.02 less than the mid-point of the option spread when GRUB was trading near $144.  Unless the stock rallies quickly from here, you should be able to get close to this amount.

Your commission on this trade will only be $2.50 per spread (the rate charged by thinkorswim for Terry’s Tips’ subscribers).  Each contract would then yield $130.50 and your broker would charge a $300 maintenance fee, making your investment $169.50 ($300 – $130.50).  If GRUB closes at any price above $144 on October 05, both options would expire worthless, and your return on the spread would be 77% (878% annualized).

Consider RealPage (RP) Following the Technical Break

Monday, August 27th, 2018

This week we are looking at another of the Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) Top 50 List companies.  We use this list in one of our options portfolios to spot outperforming stocks and place option spreads that take advantage of the momentum.

At Terry’s Tips, we have a portfolio that actually trades most of the ideas we share here.  The portfolio has experienced some losses along the way, but so far in 2018, it has recorded an 82% gain after paying all commissions.

Consider RealPage (RP) Following the Technical Break

RealPage has received some positive new coverage as of late, take a look at – What Investors Should Know About RealPage Inc’s Financial Strength and RealPage(RP) Price Target Raised to $67.00 at KeyCorp

On Friday, RP broke higher from a bullish flag pattern that had been forming for nearly four months.  The pattern suggests the stock is ready to resume its momentum-driven rally, and break to new record highs.  Adding strength to the technical outlook for RP is a 15-month rising trendline which held the stock higher during the recent correction.  The length of time the trendline has remained intact reaffirms the momentum remains strongly to the upside for RealPage stock.

If you agree there’s further upside ahead for RP, consider this trade which is a bet that the stock will continue to advance over the next four weeks, or at least not decline very much.

Sell To Open RP 21SEP18 60 Puts (RP180921P60) for a credit of $1.08 (selling a vertical)

This price was $0.02 less than the mid-point of the option spread when RP was trading near $61.  Unless the stock rallies quickly from here, you should be able to get close to this amount.

Your commission on this trade will only be $2.50 per spread (the rate charged by thinkorswim for Terry’s Tips’ subscribers).  Each contract would then yield $105.50 and your broker would charge a $500 maintenance fee, making your investment $394.50 ($500 – $105.50).  If RP closes at any price above $60 on September 21, both options would expire worthless, and your return on the spread would be 27% (428% annualized).

Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) Poised to Break to Record Highs

Sunday, August 19th, 2018

This week we are looking at another of the Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) Top 50 List companies.  We use this list in one of our options portfolios to spot outperforming stocks and place option spreads that take advantage of the momentum.

Terry

Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) Poised to Break to Record Highs

There have been some recent price target upgrades for MPWR that suggest the stock still has some further upside.  Here are two of them – Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) PT raised to $155 at Needham & Company and Brokerages Set Monolithic Power Systems, Inc. (MPWR) PT at $148.38.

The daily chart for MPWR shows three attempts at upside resistance found near $142.  As triple top patterns are rare, even more so with strong uptrends like the one seen in MPWR, and upside break appears highly likely.  As well, often stop losses get accumulated above notable horizontal levels.  Once triggered, these stops provide fuel for a momentum-driven rally.  The stock looks to be well supported as it recently recovered back above its 50-day moving average following a brief correction and has been consolidating in a range between prior highs and the 50 DMA.

Sell To Open MPWR 21SEP18 140 Puts (MPWR180921P140) for a credit of $1.68 (selling a vertical)

This price was $0.02 less than the mid-point of the option spread when MPWR was trading near $142.  Unless the stock rallies quickly from here, you should be able to get close to this amount.

Your commission on this trade will only be $2.50 per spread (the rate charged by thinkorswim for Terry’s Tips’ subscribers).  Each contract would then yield $165.50 and your broker would charge a $500 maintenance fee, making your investment $334.50 ($500 – $165.50).  If MPWR closes at any price above $140 on September 21, both options would expire worthless, and your return on the spread would be 50% (570% annualized).

Should You Buy the PayPal (PYPL) Earnings Dip?

Monday, July 30th, 2018

This week we are looking at another of the Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) Top 50 List companies.  We use this list in one of our options portfolios to spot outperforming stocks and place option spreads that take advantage of the momentum.

Terry

Should You Buy the PayPal (PYPL) Earnings Dip?

PayPal recently reported earnings and this Zack’s article outlines why the stock price dipped despite beating estimates.  Also, an author on Seeking Alpha outlines why the decline following earnings can be viewed as a merely a speed bump in the broader bullish trend.

PYPL did close earlier on the day after the earnings announcement, however, the bulk of last week’s decline took place on Friday as the markets reacted to US GDP figures and weak earnings in other technology stocks.  This left PayPal stock at a major support confluence to end the week.  The confluence consists of a horizontal level at 85.45 which was major resistance in the first quarter now turned to support, as well as the lower bound of a rising trend channel that originates from a low posted in early May.  Although there was some momentum behind Friday’s decline, recent price action has not altered the bullish technical outlook for PYPL.

PYPL Chart July 2018

If you agree there’s further upside ahead for PYPL, consider this trade which is a bet that the stock will continue to advance over the next five weeks, at least a little bit.

Buy To Open PYPL 31AUG18 83 Puts (PYPL180831P83)
Sell To Open PYPL 31AUG18 85.5 Puts (PYPL180831P85.5) for a credit of $0.98 (selling a vertical)

This price was $0.02 less than the mid-point of the option spread when PYPL was trading near $85.50.  Unless the stock rallies quickly from here, you should be able to get close to this amount.

Your commission on this trade will only be $2.50 per spread (the rate charged by thinkorswim for Terry’s Tips’ subscribers).  Each contract would then yield $95.50 and your broker would charge a $250 maintenance fee, making your investment $154.50 ($250 – $95.50).  If PYPL closes at any price above $85.50 on August 31, both options would expire worthless, and your return on the spread would be 62% (707% annualized).

Can Adobe Systems Continue the Upside Momentum?

ADBE has posted impressive gains in the year thus far, and several analysts believe there is further upside.  Here are two of them – Why Adobe Systems Stock Has Jumped 39% So Far in 2018 and 4 impressive Liquid Stocks for Marvelous Returns.

Adobe Systems stock price has one of the strongest trends among the stocks listed on the IBD Top 50 list.  The stock has been trading within a rising trend channel for the year thus far and dips have been short-lived.  ADBE turned higher from a correction in late June and is seen currently on the verge of breaking to fresh record highs.  Strong downside support is seen ahead of the channel bottom at the 20-day moving average which currently confluences with the psychological $250 level.

Consider Integrated Device Technology (IDTI) Following the Correction

Sunday, July 1st, 2018

This week we are looking at another of the Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) Top 50 List companies.  We use this list in one of our options portfolios to spot outperforming stocks and place option spreads that take advantage of the momentum.

Terry

Consider Integrated Device Technology (IDTI) Following the Correction

Several analysts are expecting further upside for Integrated Device Technology, here are two of them – What the market is missing about Integrated Device Technology and Two worthy stocks for investors: Hovnanian Enterprises, Integrated Device Technology.

IDTI Chart June 2018

IDTI Chart June 2018

IDTI has been correcting lower over the past two weeks and is now seen trading at some important technical support.  Specifically, the stock is seen bouncing from a horizontal level residing at $31.30.  This level was notably important through several gaps that took place in late 2017 and earlier this year.  As well, the stock price is near the 200-day moving average, an indicator it has not traded below on a sustained basis in about two years.

If you agree there’s further upside ahead for IDTI, consider this trade which is a bet that the stock will continue to advance over the next three weeks, at least a little bit.

Buy To Open IDTI 20JUL18 29 Puts (IDTI180720P29)
Sell To Open IDTI 20JUL18 32 Puts (IDTI180720P32) for a credit of $0.69 (selling a vertical)

This price was $0.02 less than the mid-point of the option spread when IDTI was trading near $32.  Unless the stock rallies quickly from here, you should be able to get close to this amount.

Your commission on this trade will only be $2.50 per spread (the rate charged by thinkorswim for Terry’s Tips’ subscribers).  Each contract would then yield $66.50 and your broker would charge a $300 maintenance fee, making your investment $233.50 ($300 – $66.50).  If IDTI closes at any price above $32 on July 20, both options would expire worthless, and your return on the spread would be 28% (568% annualized).

Lululemon (LULU) Stock Price Surges Following Earnings

Sunday, June 24th, 2018

This week we are looking at another of the Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) Top 50 List companies.  We use this list in one of our options portfolios to spot outperforming stocks and place option spreads that take advantage of the momentum.

I thought I might share with you the first paragraph of this week’s report to our paying subscribers – “Bad Week for the Market (Down 1%), But Our Composite Portfolio Average Gains 5% Thanks to Blow-Out Week for Wiley Wolf (up 47%): A week ago, we were celebrating a 26.5% gain in Wiley Wolf when FB gained 3.6%, but that was nothing compared to this week’s colossal 47.6% gain on a 3.0% rise in the stock.  In two weeks, the portfolio has moved from a value of $4,472 to today’s $8,353.  The 10K Strategy can deliver extraordinary results when you are leaning to the bullish side and the underlying cooperates by going up (which you expect it to do or you wouldn’t have selected that stock in the first place).  Positive results from this strategy also appeared this week in Rising Tide where the portfolio gained 10% while the underlying MA rose 1%.”

I hope you enjoy this week’s trading idea.

Lululemon (LULU) Stock Price Surges Following Earnings

LULU rose to record highs earlier this month following its earnings report.  Several analysts think the stock can go a lot higher, here are two of them – Was Lululemon Athletica Inc’s Earnings Growth Better Than The Industry’s? and 7 Debt-Free Companies Doing Big Stock Buybacks

Lululemon Athletica’s stock price gapped higher following the earnings announcement, reaching a high just shy of the $130 handle.  Momentum has slowed somewhat, yet the technicals remain supportive as the stock trades within a rising up channel and has held above it’s 20-day moving average.

Kemet stock has rallied since its earnings report in late May and these two articles suggest the stock price could continue higher –  Keep eye on 52-week high price – Kemet Corporation and Is the options market predicting a spike in Kemet stock?

KEM rose above a significant level last week, suggesting that bulls are firmly in control.  The horizontal level resides at $21.20 and served as a barrier on two attempts earlier this year, with each prior attempt resulting in a correction lower below $18.  The stock now trades at a fresh high for the year with sights on the 52-week high near $27.

Grubhub (GRUB) Offers An Attractive Entry Point

This week we are looking at another of the Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) Top 50 List companies.  We use this list in one of our options portfolios to spot outperforming stocks and place option spreads that take advantage of the momentum.

The actual Terry’s Tips  portfolio that places trades that you read about here has gained 99.7% so far in 2018.  That’s pretty close to doubling our money in less than six months, and all the paying Terry’s Tips subscribers who are following that portfolio, either on their own or through the free Auto-Trade service offered by thinkorswim are happy campers right now.

Grubhub (GRUB) Offers An Attractive Entry Point

Grubhub’s stock price recently broke higher and several analysts expect the upside momentum to continue.  This article published on Benzinga includes a target that suggests about a 20% upside.  A detailed article outlining why there could be more upside in GRUB was also published on InvestorPlace.  While the second article has a bit more of a conservative target, it still points to a potential 10% gain in the stock price.

The GRUB technical chart is signaling a bullish continuation.  The stock price broke out from a bullish flag pattern in early May and has more recently cleared above a clear horizontal resistance level found near $105.  The same level should protect any corrections for bulls to remain in control.  The stock price has also consistently traded above its 20-day moving average since the bull flag was activated.

Success Stories

I have been trading the equity markets with many different strategies for over 40 years. Terry Allen's strategies have been the most consistent money makers for me. I used them during the 2008 melt-down, to earn over 50% annualized return, while all my neighbors were crying about their losses.
