Giving Is Living

A special note from Terry

One of the greatest things about making money with stock options is that if you're successful, you can give it all away. That's when the real fun starts.

For many years, I gave away over 50 college scholarships of $3,000 each to needy students or single parents. I required each scholarship recipient to read a biography or autobiography of their choice and to set personal goals for themselves - a requirement that may be a greater gift than the scholarship.

My second largest project was my wife Debbie's passion - the Ferrisburgh Artisans Guild, a gallery displaying the works of 150 juried Vermont artists, and an education center offering classes in all sorts of artistic media for preschoolers through senior citizens.

I also got a big kick out of donating $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Club so they could build a swimming pool for their kids.

Giving Is Living - How It Started

In May of 1997, I set up and funded the Terry F. Allen Family Charitable Trust. The Trust's major objective is to donate one thousand dollars every day to worthy charitable groups - forever! For the first four years of it's existence, the Trust has exceeded its goal by a good margin, donating over $400,000 every year. Preference was given to organizations that have;

  1. little or no development overhead
  2. a large amount of contributed labor to their cause
  3. no natural constituency
  4. little support from conventional charitable organizations like the United Way
  5. support for women and children at risk

Following is a list of the organizations that have received donations from the Trust so far - over 110 different groups.
